Government of Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit speaks to the press after casting his ballot. Southern Sudanese voters turned out in huge numbers on the first day of polling in the long-awaited Southern Sudan self-determination referendum.  Many voters slept at the polling stations in order to be one of the first to cast ballots in the plebiscite, which will determine whether Sudan remains united or Southern Sudan secedes to form a new country.
